Indicator: Drought hazard (number of droughts 1981-2010)

This drought hazard indicator shows the number of droughts for each country at NUTS0. The indicator is based on information retrieved from the European Drought Observatory (EDO) of JRC. The hazard assessment utilizes the Standardized Precipitation Index for three-month periods (SPI3), which is based on observed precipitation values. The SPI3 indicator shows deviations from the average three-monthly cumulative precipitation. (Spinoni et al., 2019). For the drought indicator, the monthly SPI3 values at country level for the period 1981-2010 were calculated.
To calculate the number of droughts in each country for the period 1981-2010, each case of consecutive months with a drought indicator value = 1 (see preliminary processing e) was calculated as one drought. The number of droughts were summed up for the period the period 1981-2010.
