The indicator represents the percentage of the protected area on the whole area of a NUTS3 - region. The unit is [%]. The data were generated by geo-processing, using geographical data on NUTS3- boundaries, Natura 2000 sites (End 2016) from the European Environment Agency and Nationally designated areas (2017), coming from the Common Database on Designated Areas (CDDA), also downloaded from the EEA database.
All categories of protected areas in the Natura 2000 Network and Nationally designated areas were considered for the calculation of the percentage of protected areas by NUTS3- regions.

The percentage was calculated by the background indicators of protected area by NUTS3- region (Numenator) and the total area by NUTS3- region (Denumenator). As Protected Areas were considered all areas from the "Nationally designated areas" (2017) and Natura 2000 sites (2016), downloaded from the database of the European Environment Agency. All categories of protected areas were considered for the generation of the protected surface area. The protected surface area by NUTS3 region is based on an geospatial analysis using the ArcGIS-software.
