Indicator metadata: Protected areas (total surface)

This indicator represents the absolute value of the protected area by NUTS 3 - region in km², which is covered by Natura 2000 sites and Nationally designated areas. Natura 2000 sites (End 2016) derive from the European Environment Agency (EEA). Nationally designated areas (2017), coming from the Common Database on Designated Areas (CDDA), also downloaded from the EEA database.

Methodology

The protected surface area by NUTS3 region is based on an geospatial analysis using the "Erase"- tool of the ArcGIS-software. The protected areas were substracted from the total NUTS3- area, to get the surface area [km²] of all non-protected areas by NUTS3- region. These were substracted from the total area of NUTS3- region to get the value of PA.
