Abstract

The Quality of Life Measurement and Methodology project data is composed by one main dataset containing the main results of the project and other data related to the study cases.

The main dataset "Territorial Quality of Life Index" contains the results of the TQoL composite index methodology at European level. It contains 4 main indicators, EU TQoL Index and its 3 composing dimensions (B-good life enablers, M-life maintenance and F-life flourishing). The composite index at lower levels (9 domains and 20 sub-domains) are also available within the background indicators in the "TQoL European Dashboard tool". It also contains a database named "Quality of Life indicators" with all the indicators that have been used to elaborate the each of the composite indicators.

The other data has been organised by the following datasets:

-Barcelona study case. It contains the quality of life indicators gathered, the dashboard tool used to calculate the TQoL composite indexes, the resulting TQoL composite Indexes (sub-domain, domain, dimension and general) and the results of applying the latent class clustering approach.

-Vienna study case. It contains the quality of life indicators gathered, the dashboard tool used to calculate the TQoL composite indexes and the resulting TQoL composite Indexes (sub-domain, domain, dimension and general).

-Other study cases. It contains the dashboard tool used to calculate the TQoL composite indexes in Helsinki-Ussima and Wales, the territorial quality of life indicators gathered for Vienna and the results of applying the latent class clustering approach in Netherlands.

-European context. It contains the resulting TQoL composite Indexes in 2 different time periods (2010-2014 and 2015-2019), the Regional Social Progress Index at NUTS 2 and the results of applying the latent class clustering approach in the European context at NUTS3.

The specific methodology for measuring quality of life encompasses the following steps:

Step 1. Selection of QoL indicators: the selected indicators are in the indicator "Quality of Life indicators (qol_indi)"

Step 2. Data harmonisation: Carried out to render the variables comparable. Outliers in the dataset are identified and excluded. Highly skewed distributions are transformed (logarithmic and power transformations). Indicators are normalised in a range [0-1]. These steps were made using the "TQoL Dashboard tool for policy makers (dasht_pm)".

Step 3. Weighing QoL indicators. The "TQoL European Dashboard tool (dasht_eu)" allows for changing weights of each indicator within domains and sub-domains, for instance to apply weights after a consultation with groups of experts, stakeholders of citizens. Same weights were considered to elaborate the composite indicators available in this project.

For further details regarding the methodology check the ESPON QoL Final Report available at the project website.
