This section answers how can regions be grouped according to their relatedness. By means of a cluster analysis, different regional typologies are identified able to group regions with similar behaviour of the indicators. The analysis is drawn by looking at the average results in the indicators for the regions of each group. Complementary, the following map represents the 4 groups of regions identified in the first cluster analyisis (4 groups).
Group 2, corresponding to less-intensive regions but with extensive connections, is predominant in France, Germany, Italy and the UK, with the exception of the main metropolitan areas and capital cities. Group 1 is characterized by regions that present low results in four indicators, but a high positive value in connectivity. Such regions are predominant in Portugal, the atlantic part of Spain, Iceland,Finland, Sweden, Poland and other Eastern Europe countries and certain singular regions in France, Belgium, Ireland or Italy.
On the other hand, groups 3 and 4 present high results in a large set of indicators, with the exception of Connectivity for Group 3 and Send-Receiver Balance, Network Selectivity and External Influence for Group 4. Group 4 identifies some important metropolitan areas such as Île de France, Dublin, Lombardía,... Finally, the Group 3 regions corresponds to regions where almost all indicators are positive.
