EXTERNAL INFLUENCE measures the same as NETWORK SELECTIVITY but from the perspective of importing regions. It asks how much of the amount sent by the region of origin in question contributes to the incoming flows in the destination. The policy relevance is, as above, related to the potential relation of dependency between regions. Note that the value of one of these two variables in exporting regions corresponds to the value of the other in importing regions.
