Expected CO2 emissions by NUTS regions calculated on the basis of the EDGAR database. Emission totals do not necessarily correspond exactly to the inventories reported by governments to the UNFCCC as the EDGAR database GHG emissions are calculated according to slightly different assumptions. The national emission estimates are used in conjunction with different proxy variables for the various sectors to calculate expected or predicted emissions for nodes of the 0.1x0.1 degree grid. The CO2 emissions from fossil fuel combustion by NUTS-regions are caculated by extracting CO2-emissions excluding organic carbon combustion and large scale biomass burning. The emissions from mobile sources are only to some extent linked to the economic activity of the territories from which they are emitted. For ground transport though to a higher extent than for aviation and shipping. The aviation and shipping emissions are thus excluded from the dataset whereas emissions with and without ground transport are calculated.
